Class Expectations:

Every student is expected to:

Show up on time, and prepared for class.

Bring their planner and novel to class daily.

Treat classmates and instructor with respect.

Help other when needed.

Participate in class activities.

Play an active part in their own learning and exploration of the language arts.


Grade break-down:

Published Works – 20%

This section contains all of the written pieces composed for class. This will include all final and rough drafts of stories, reports, poetry etc., as well as peer-editing and writers’ workshop activities.

Reading – 20%

Each quarter, students are responsible for reading TWO novels apart from those read in class. One of these novels is the student’s choice; the other must fit into a genre chosen by the teacher (the genre will change each quarter). All assignments associated with these novels will fall under this category, as well as the “Reader’s Notebook.”

Writer’s Notebook – 15%

The writer’s Notebook is a valuable tool that students will use for daily writing prompts and activities. This notebook will be graded periodically.

Tests & Quizzes – 10%

Homework – 10%

In-class Assignments – 10%

Grammar – 10%

Students will complete grammar exercises and activities in order to better their understanding of the English language. These assignments will fall under this category.

FISH! – 5%

Students will receive three points daily for their Preparedness and participation. This can be considered akin to a “citizenship” grade.
